In Year 1, we welcome children to a new phase in their learning, where they participate with excitement in class assemblies, sports days and have the opportunity to win a worker of the week certificate, celebrated by their Primary peers.
Termly class trips are organised, where children learn about flora and fauna, and participate in a range of outdoor activities, including horse riding and orienteering.
The aim in Year 1 is to build on the good practice in Foundation Stage, with a strong early emphasis on play-based, active learning – building towards more formal group work.
Our phonics teaching follows the ‘Letters and Sounds’ programme used in the UK, supporting children to listen to, copy and talk about sounds, and to use their knowledge to begin reading and writing words as soon as they are ready.
Computing this year, develops children’s skills from using Bee-bots to independently coding on a class set of iPads. The Reading Eggs program is also used weekly to develop their reading and phonics work.
Reading is an important skill and we value it highly in Year 1. Every day, children will bring home a reading book, together with a reading record book to be shared with their family.
Year 1 enjoy sharing a playtime with Reception and Year 2. The children are provided ample opportunities to socialise, with a break in the morning and afternoon, as well as at lunch time.
