Wellbeing

At the British International School of Tenerife, safeguarding and wellbeing is our priority. These principles are integrated into our curriculum through weekly PSHEE lessons (Personal, Social, Health, and Economic education), Friday assemblies, and celebration-themed weeks throughout the year.

Our school pillarsCommitment, Kindness, Honesty, and Respect—are seamlessly woven into every aspect of school life, both in and out of the classroom, ensuring a nurturing and supportive environment for all.

We are also fortunate to have Kim, our dedicated full-time wellbeing practitioner, who provides vital support to individuals.

PSHEE: During our weekly sessions, we focus on children’s wellbeing through engaging stories, videos, and class discussions. Our aim is to ensure that every pupil feels heard and understood.

SPECIAL CELEBRATIONS: Throughout the school year, we celebrate special days to foster empathy, understanding, and awareness. These celebrations include Odd Socks Day, Anti-Conflict Week, E-Safety Week, and Random Acts of Kindness Week.

They are designed to teach strategies to prevent bullying and any form of disrespectful behaviour. We believe in a proactive approach, addressing issues before they become significant concerns.

Here you’ll find more information about these special celebrations:

Odd Socks Day: This fun and colourful day encourages students to celebrate their individuality and uniqueness by wearing mismatched socks. It’s a light-hearted way to remind everyone that it’s okay to be different and that diversity should be celebrated.

Anti-Conflict Week: A dedicated week focused on conflict resolution and promoting peaceful interactions. Students participate in workshops and activities that teach effective communication, empathy, and problem-solving skills to prevent and address conflicts in a constructive manner.

E-Safety Week: This week is all about educating students on how to stay safe online. Through interactive sessions and activities, students learn about cyberbullying, data privacy, responsible social media use, and strategies for protecting themselves in the digital world. We also hold annual e-safety workshops for parents designed to educate and empower parents with the knowledge and tools they need to keep their children safe online.

Random Acts of Kindness Week:

A week dedicated to spreading kindness and positivity throughout the school community. Students are encouraged to perform small acts of kindness, whether it’s helping a classmate, writing a thank-you note, or volunteering their time. The goal is to create a ripple effect of goodwill and compassion.

CERTIFICATES: Children are awarded certificates for showcasing our pillars around the school during our assemblies. These are honesty, kindness, commitment and respect. Key values that we promote to make sure our students become citizens and provide responsible leadership in our community. These values help instil a sense of integrity, empathy, and dedication, shaping our students into well-rounded individuals who contribute positively to society.

PLAYGROUND BUDDIES: This is one of the many roles of our school leaders. They help ensure that everyone has a positive and inclusive experience during playtimes. They assist younger students, mediate conflicts, and organize games and activities to promote a friendly and supportive playground environment.

FRIENDSHIP BENCH: This colourful bench is on the playground where children can go if they are feeling lonely or in need of a friend. Sitting on the bench provides a signal to others that they are looking for someone to play with.

S.T.O.P POSTBOX: This post box is accessible for all. Children leave a note when they feel someone has been disrespectful by doing something “Several Times On Purpose,” referring to bullying. We address these as soon as we can to make sure it doesn’t continue.

WELLBEING BOX: The secondary pupils also have a wellbeing box used for pupils to ask any safeguarding or wellbeing related questions or to express any concerns. They can do this anonymously if they prefer.

WELLBEING HELP LINES: We display helpline posters around the school in secondary. These may be to help parents, students or the school itself.

These helplines include gender-based violence, which is spoken about as part of our PSHEE curriculum

Our yearly celebration of International Women’s Day also promotes equality in our society.

WELLBEING PARCTINIONER CONTACT: Reminders of who to go to if pupils feel they need to talk to an expert related to their wellbeing are also available as visuals around the school. Kim, our wellbeing practitioner will address these personally.

YOGA: Our school Wellbeing Practitioner also offers both Primary and Secondary afterschool yoga clubs. These clubs provide an excellent opportunity for students to work on their physical and mental well-being through yoga practices.

RELAXATION AND GAME GROUP: During some of the students’ rest breaks in secondary, our Wellbeing Practitioner, Kim, hosts a relaxation and game group.

This initiative supports students who find the playground environment loud and overwhelming. It provides them with a quieter space to socialize, play games, and engage in activities like colouring, fostering connections in a more comfortable setting.

WORKSHOPS:

At our school, we offer a variety of student workshops on essential topics, including:

  • First Aid
  • Healthy Living
  • Technological Abuse
  • E-Safety

We are also excited to announce that we will be organizing water safety training and other future training sessions, based on the valuable feedback we receive from parents during our Parent Coffee Mornings. These workshops aim to provide students with valuable knowledge and skills to help them lead safer, healthier, and more informed lives.
