Reading

As a school, we promote reading for pleasure in every way possible. Students regularly visit the school library, where they can find a diverse selection of books. We host book fairs, integrate reading into the curriculum, and assign class reading sessions. Each classroom has a relaxing reading area, and we encourage parental involvement by allowing students to take books home. We also offer the Oxford Reading Tree as a digital resource for e-books. Additionally, we celebrate reading during World Book Day, Book Week and host reading challenges and competitions!

Reading Race

Our ongoing competition, the school’s Reading Race in Primary, encourages classes to earn points for reading. In Phase 2, we recognize that pupils are developing basic reading skills, so points are awarded for hard work during phonics sessions, practicing weekly spellings, and reading at home or at school with an adult. Our Reading Ambassadors also support new students or those needing extra help several mornings a week. Once students are confident in their reading skills, they move to Phase 3, where they earn points every time they finish reading a book. Our library monitors collect these points weekly and announce the results in our Friday assembly. These results are displayed on our library’s Reading Race board. The winners receive a reward at the end of each term!
