Lea Baumgartner Ojea – Graduated in 2015 I am the French and Foreign Language Spanish teacher at the British School of Tenerife and I am proud to contribute to the same community where I was once a student. The BST´s international environment and family-like atmosphere were defining aspects of my education. The connections I made with classmates and teachers remain invaluable to this day. After graduating from the BST, I pursued a degree in Translation and Interpreting of French and German in Edinburgh, where I also learned British Sign Language. As part of my studies, I spent a split year abroad in Brussels and Vienna. These experiences were unforgettable, offering opportunities such as practising interpretation at the European Commission and Parliament in Brussels, which further fuelled my passion for languages and cross-cultural communication. In my free time, I have always enjoyed painting, singing and playing the guitar. After working as a private tutor for languages and neurodiverse students, I later completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) at the University of Nottingham, specialising in language teaching, and returned to the BST primary school for my teaching practice. Before rejoining the BST as a teacher, I worked at Colegio Pureza de María, where I refined my teaching skills and developed a deeper appreciation for language education. Now, as part of the BST staff, I am dedicated to creating the same enriching and supportive environment that inspired me as a student. I aim to help my students develop their language skills and a broader understanding of the world, preparing them for future global opportunities. Eva Baumgartner – Graduated in 2013 This is my fourth year working as the Science teacher at the British School of Tenerife. Having been a student at this very school, it is a privilege to now contribute to the same nurturing environment that shaped my own education. After graduating from the BST, I pursued a four-year degree in Biological Sciences (Ecology) at Edinburgh University. During my studies, I went on a memorable international exchange at the University of British Columbia in Canada, where I deepened my knowledge of marine biology. I then completed a Master’s degree in Ecology, Evolution and Conservation at Imperial College London; where my thesis research focused on the ecology and habitat use of Angelsharks in the Canary Islands. I still volunteer for surveys with the Angel Shark Project, actively contributing to the conservation of this critically endangered species. My journey into teaching began after several years of volunteering, working in marine sciences and advancing my SCUBA diving certifications. While private tutoring, I discovered a passion for education and decided to formalise this through a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE), specialising in teaching Science at the secondary level. After completing my teaching practice, I worked at a school in Cambridge before accepting the opportunity to return to Tenerife. Teaching at the BST feels like coming home. During my time as a student at the BST, I was always especially grateful for the emphasis on practical science lessons, which inspired my own love for biology. The support and sense of community provided by this school, both as a student and now as a teacher, have been truly invaluable. I am proud to be part of this family and to inspire the next generation of scientists.
