British education has a long history in the north of Tenerife. In 1967 Mr. Bernard Yeoward donated a site in Puerto de la Cruz on which the first British School on the island of Tenerife was founded The British Yeoward School (BYS); the school subsequently changes its name to The International British Yeoward School (IBYS).
In 1991 the Simmonds family set up and directed Trinity School in Los Realejos until 2010 when Trinity and the IBYS merged.
The IBYS and Trinity School were members of the National Association of Schools in Spain (NABSS). NABSS is responsible for inspecting British schools. Accreditation for British schools is required from the British Council before Spanish authorities grant schools permission. The IBYS and Trinity School were fully authorised by these authorities.
Both schools followed the English National Curriculum and educated children and young people from the ages of 2 to 18. Students of many different nationalities attended the schools including children from local Canarian families. The schools were non-selective, welcoming children of all abilities. Both schools are extremely proud of the young people who passed through their doors. Exam results were on par with the best schools in the UK and many students went on to study in top universities there, in Spain and internationally.
In 2010 the schools merged to form the British School of Tenerife (BST). The merger allowed the new school to combine teaching staff and offer a wider range of subjects in the secondary department. It also facilitated a restructuring of the different departments in the school, eventually designating the Yeoward site in La Luz for Primary and the Trinity site in Los Realejos for secondary. The BST carries on the excellent education offered by the IBYS and Trinity School; it carries on the tradition of British education initiated in the north of Tenerife by the Yeoward and Simmonds families.
The Yeoward family, a pioneering and enterprising saga of Tenerife lovers, stayed committed to helping families in the north of the island obtain the best possible education for their children; their unwavering commitment to the school project remains intact until the present day. The families core values, commitment, kindness, honesty and respect have remained at the heart of the schools ethos until the present day.
The school is recognized by the Spanish government and authorized to function as an international school following the British education system.
To accommodate the growing number of students, the new purpose-built school building is inaugurated in La Luz, a neighborhood of La Orotava, for students in Primary and Early Years. The building includes well-furnished and resourced classrooms. Separate playgrounds are available for the younger and older children, and additional facilities for group and creative work include the school library, a spacious assembly room for drama and music, an art studio and a large sports hall and dining area.
The school joins the National Association of British Schools in Spain (NABSS), whose purpose is to ensure that the highest level of British education is taught to students, to represent the common interests of the schools and encourage collaboration between them.
The International Yeoward school merges with the Trinity school to form the British School of Tenerife, a school with six hundred pupils and eighty staff members.
